Square hole drill

Those things have been around a good while, I remember there was a kit that did triangle square penta and hexagon by changing out some bits, never actually used one myself but a fascinating idea, I would think it would be really useful for plastic and wood stuff, I couldn’t see it being a long term production method for ferrous metals myself , nice though

I actually have one of those, with templates and drill for 1/2". I have used it several times, and it works very well. Through holes, or blind holes, both work.
I'd like the drills and templates for more sizes, but it runs about $200 per size, and I have not needed to drill a square that badly. For smaller holes the file works, and for larger I's need a different holder. (Yeah, Doozer, I'm too cheap to buy those, you can score a win on that point).
I might try making the tooling, since I have an example. The drill cuts only on the end, but the shape is important on account of the guide.CNC machines only go through the motions.
Ideas expressed may be mine, or from anyone else in the universe.

It sounds like hell lol so must just be all cutting is plunge and no side flutes for that special bit? because if it had side flutes they would sure get beat into dull in a matter of seconds using them as a "guide" against the square receptor... it does a surprisingly good job...

Yep, the video was a Watts Bros unit, the one I have is a Watts Bros. unit. I don't know that anyone else has bothered to copy them. You'd think someone would, but it's a small market, probably nobody considers it worth the effort.
The hole is not "perfect", the corners have a slight radius. But plenty good enough for a lot of uses. Mostly I have used it to drill square holes for a socket wrench.CNC machines only go through the motions.

I have worse to make, a tapered hole with an octagen in it. The hole in 1 1/2" thick chrome moly is about 11/8" diameter and tapered by 2.5 degrees. I am resigned to have to file it by hand, not being able to think of a way to mill it. An external one would be easy to make. It is for a small fly press that I bought which was missing its handle.Last edited by old mart; 03-12-2023, 02:53 PM.
