  • spring material question

I need to make a trigger guard for an under hammer muzzle loader, the trigger guard bow also acts as the main spring for the hammer. I am not sure what material to use. I could use some help on what would make the best material for tempering in to a spring

You can get flat blued spring stock from McMaster Carr in varying widths and thicknesses.

Have any old hand saws around? Like really nasty ones that are not salvageable? The steel from that saw plate would be a pretty good option if it's thick enough to give you the power you need.

Given the curve it needs I think you'll want to make it from annealed metal and get it to roughly the relaxed shape and then harden and temper to a blue spring color.

If you make it from pre tempered spring stock which is already blued then heat soak it after the bending so it is "happy" with the new shape. You can do that at around 450F in the regular oven for a 30 minute soak.

Which underhammer action is it? I've got a Hopkins and Allen underhammer that I really enjoy. If that's the one you have I'll measure the material thickness. I could even supply you with a sketch of the relaxed shape for your shaping efforts.

I found some spring stock on Dixie gun Works that looks like it will work just need shaped and heat treated, will try them out.
