Was speaking aesthetically, the model much more resembles a 60's era BMW engine more so than anything Douglas came up with, the model is more refined and less crude/archaic,
But --- if you want to get technical then the proper way to describe it is "a knock off of a knock off of a knock off" Due to BMW using and drastically improving on the Douglas design and Douglas using "Light motors company's" design of their horizontally opposed twin used in their motorcycle/pedal bikes...
The daring aeronaut was Richard Pearse of NZ who is reputed to have flown his machine in January 1903, well, maybe.
However he did manage to build an engine of lightweight and compact design, two double acting cylinders and producing 25HP or so, maybe more than the Wright Brothers. It is in the picture just in front of the wing.
That's a ton of ponies for back in the day wish there was something to size for scale, here's a flight that did not go as well this is the B-24 consolidated Liberator we hiked up to and I found that loose rocker arm on the ground, ball bearing, and elephant foot for the adjuster end - all in the early 40's - thing weighed a ton but damn was it built good...
My very own P.A.C. (Port Aspiration Concept) I built when i was a kid - adapted to a GN-400 suzuki, basically two tubes spinning inside of tubes, sealed by volkwagon piston rings and Mazda rotary apex seals... the carb was mounted on the other side with a rotating seal and the exhaust was full bore wide open...
I built a four stroke without valves when I was just 23...
I would never refer to a HSM as an engine builder.

Who would you call the home shop machinist that built the engine on the Wright Flyer for their first flight? The FAA to this day gives out an award each year to mechanics in his name.
Visited Kitty Hawk and perused the full scale Wright Flyer. Them boys figured out/designed a purty slick carburetor for the motor. Spend a few hours on that hill, your thoughts will stay with you forever.
Known better ? lol its the very groundwork that separates me from chumps like you lol I kept growing bloke, and you ? you melded your finest life long efforts into building plywood chassis wicker basket cars,,, and the sad thing about your achievements? dozens of hillbillies already beat you to it lol
