Picked this Bandsaw out of metal pile at dump yesterday,Tawain built mostly cast iron excluding stand, the stand got twisted when discarded.Plugged into power and runs like a champ,3/4 hp and all critical components not damaged. Will convert for strictly metal for son in-law,a new stand and urethane tires along with TLC should be good.

You guys are lucky, being able to pick stuff out of the dump. It used to be like that here in the UK, maybe 30 years ago, but now, any attempt to take anything away is regarded as theft (it becomes the property of the site owners the second it hits the skip) and guys have been prosecuted. Even attempts to slip the operatives a few quid to look the other way can be treated as attempted bribery of a public servant.'It may not always be the best policy to do what is best technically, but those responsible for policy can never form a right judgement without knowledge of what is right technically' - 'Dutch' Kindelberger

I've got a Harbor Freight just like it I bought new, over 20 years ago. I've used it 3 or 4 times in all those years. When I first got it I tuned it up all over so it would operate as it should. I made a cast iron insert for the center of the table to replace the plaskit one.

Been a long time since we here were allowed to scrounge at the dump. Further north in PG they made separate buildings to temporarily house stuff so people could pick through and take stuff home.
Yesterday I heard the 'horror' story of how we separate plastics by their codes for proper recycling, then when it's hauled away it all goes into trash anyway.
Last time I scrounged at the dump I picked up an outboard motor, and used the gears for a right angle attachment for the mill.
That was many years ago, and next time I tried that I was reprimanded for trying to lessen my bill by taking weight out with me.
I seldom do anything within the scope of logical reason and calculated cost/benefit, etc- I'm following my passion-

Not concerned how little of $ value it has,I look at what the machine may be capable of,it will not be cutting heavy stuff like I do with with my Doall.I’m cautiously optimistic with a high quality blade and proper setup it will be able to be useful for SIL jobs building Hot rods. One bonus it doesn’t have guide bearing as pic shows.
Maybe Dan SIL will have to duke it out with friends &neighbors(Vultures lol!) when I kick the bucket lol!🤓

And just what does "the state" do with them? Do they rebuild them and use them? Do they even sell them to interested parties?
But I bet "the state" loudly advocates recycling.
Can you say hypocrites?
