Which stainless steel to order?

Did anybody mention making the parts from a machinable steel, then send out for chrome plate? Many times it's been suggested to me to 'just use hard chromed shafting'. It would be good if the hard chrome followed the features, such as the grooves. Stainless is probably the only way then, if you don't have access to plating.

I like the idea of sending them out after machining. When they get back I can machine the bores to fit the plated rods. It looks like Darryl wins the prize!
