  • Starrett model 98-18 precision level test vial

I've just gotten a really nice clean 18" Starrett model 98 precision levelrecently. Unfortunately the glass teat vial is broken. Other than MR.Starrett where can I get one of these vials, by its self, with the liquid still in it?

An industrial or scientific supply house should be able to supply what you need.
The repair department at Starrett is very good and very reasonably priced, I have delt with them several times and everything was always returned in a like new condition.
Write or email the Plant in Athol Mass. addressed to the Repair Dept.
    Non, je ne regrette rien.

You could lap your own. There was an article in old issue of Model Engineer. John Stevenson might have a duplicate copy to sell you if you find out which one it is - it was an article an building your own machinists precision level. website is

I will try to check my old copies and if I find it I will post the issue number (they go upto #4800+)

That being said, you would be better off returning it to Starrett for repair.

There are two of the vials for the 98 on ebay right now.
I use a Shoptask Eldorado 3 in one machine, but I am a beginner seeking help.

          Thanks TexasJ10,

I've bid on both of them. I've also Emailed Starrett but got no reply. Does anyone know the P/N or EDP no. and the price on the 18" test vial?

I have a hunch that e-mail may not be the most efficient way of reaching Starrett.

Starrett never got in touch w/me BUT I won the bid for the 18" test vial on Ebay. I guess $42.00 is not too much. I know that I could not make it for that much! Many thanks to all who responded.

Starrett no longer sells the vials to the public by themselves. They will only sell the entire assembly: brass tube, friction liner, end caps and screws for $66.25 + S*H & + Tx. for the 12" & 18" levels.
