  • National Ass'n of Music Merchants in Anaheim?

Several of the members here are in the music business. Is anyone going to the NAMM convention in Anaheim in a couple of weeks? Maybe we could get together for breakfast or a beer? Thanks--Mike.

    Not going this year.....

New owners (Loud Technologies... same as Mackie & EAW) only send a few people to NAMM.

How are things going with the merger with SLM? Our peavey rep went to work for Loud as an audio consultant. How about Frank Ford?

To be perfectly clear, they did NOT "Merge" with SLM.

Loud BOUGHT SLM, and since then has: closed the US factory, shut down ALL US service operations, including firing all the authorized service centers. They have moved the entire service operation to Shanghai.

They will support warranty repair only, on the basis of unit replacement, with returned units shipped to Shanghai for repair. Out-of warranty repairs are apparently not supported at all, no repair parts will be available, although that is not official yet.

They have closed down all drafting and support services other than at Loud HQ, and fired about 85% of the SLM staff.

They have moved 100% of all manufacturing operations to china or Vietnam.

To be fair, they have done exactly the same to EAW, and had done it to Mackie already.

Sounds like a few more people with displaced jobs will need to be re-trained in computers ... oops, I mean ... stem cell research.

JT, What's the impact on that market and do you think new, leaner domestic replacements will pop up? The consumer only wants cheap, however, and has no clue as to what they are doing to our manufacturing base.

I don't go to NAMM. Probably should, but if there's one place I don't like to be, it's a great big convention where I have responsibilities. Our shop sends four or five there every year, so we know what's going on and can keep good contact with suppliers.

Me, I go to the small luthier conventions where there are 400 instead of 40,000 attendees. The way we have our business "organized" it's more important for me to keep up with the luthier community.

And, again this year, I'll be making my semiannual trip to Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery to do my two-day "stand and deliver" lecture-demo the week before NAMM.

            Cheers,

            Frank Ford
