  • Roll Pins On Steroids!

Just disassembled the boom on a small excavator. The left/right pivot at the base of the boom consists of a 1.5" diameter pin running in a pair of what appear to be giant roll pins: 2" OD, 1.5" ID, 3" long, split down one side, chamfered on the OD. Anyone know of a source for such a thing? Were they used because they are better in this application than a regular bushing secured with loctite, or because they were quick to install?

Those are called tension bushings. Made of spring steel to self retain, take up wear, and fit egg shaped bores. I'm guessing your excavator has been worked on before. An ag or industrial equipment dealer, bearing dealer, or Fastenall should have what you need.
