For many years (40 maybe) I've used one inch travel dial indicators mounted on biscuit magnets to register slide movements. Takes all the gurss work out of adjusting for backlash and determining actual (Vs hoped fo) slide movements.
And another huge advantage of the above is that when, not if, you reach the end of the indicators travel, the magnetic base allows the indicator to slide down the ways, so it is not destroyed.
Any time a 1" travel indicator is clamped with a positive stop at the other end, .......disaster.
