need to make a 3MT male by one inch die for a 3" slitsaw.What kind of steel, and do i need the keyway? Thanks of any advice Terry.

I made a straight-shank slitting saw arbor out of 1" 1018, and it's worked great. I don't see why the relatively soft steel would be a problem on the Morse Taper, as long as the quill doesn't have any scores or burrs.

Agree -- you don't need anything fancy, if this isn't for "production" use where it will take a beating. I like 1144, as I think it turns better than 1018 and I get a better finish, but functionally it won't matter.
Why not save yourself some trouble and make a 3/4" straight shank to go into a MT3 collet?
