this must be good for somebody Alistair

Please excuse my typing as I have a form of parkinsons disease

i already have one like it. as soon as i get the motor mounts replaced then the belt will stop jumping off. mine has leaking heads seals too.

but with the minor repaires i think it will be a good grinder.

NOT a good buy ...IF ...it has the old type bearings

those early 540's had babit bearings ...once those are gone you're goosed ...

cant be overhauled by yourself ...without vast experience ,knowledge and all the gear.

no one refurbishes the old heads anymore ....not even Jones and Shipman

you either have to find a newer modern ball-bearing second hand head for it ....which are never sold on there own ...

or purchase outright a brand new head from Jones and Shipman ..for over £500

You can tell its an older machine with babit bearings by an oil site glass on the head...cant see what head that machine has though

      REMEMBER THIS GUYS....be careful

      all the best..mark

        Hi,

Yep, got to agree with Mark, most likely a Good-Bye.

I've never tried, but it "might" be an interesting experiment to try and recast the babbitt with the wheel-head shaft in place.

I watched my Grandfather do such things on tractor engine crank shafts. Gotta love them old farmers. No money to fix things, but they still get it done anyway!
