  • Bandsaw Question

    Hello Group
New member here with probably a foolish bandsaw question. Would any of the small table top bandsaws work for cutting metal? I'm looking at cutting out shapes out of 1/4" 12L or Aluminum. I know a bi-metal blade and speed reduction is a must. I would love to have a larger machine but just don't have any more room for floor standing equipment, something would have to go in order to make room for a larger machine. A few issues back in the Home Shop Machinist a gentleman had a good write up on a small bandsaw he built which he used for both metal and wood cutting. My thinking with my room limitations this home built machine or one of the table top models might work. Would this be a waste of time/money to buy or build a machine this small?

    Thanks,
    Jon

    Jon,
You can cut aluminum on a wood type band saw or table saw. It will be loud, but cuts fine. For steel you need a 10:1 or so reduction in blade surface speed.
