  • 1 1/2" - 8 Thd Steel Collars

Anyone with access to a Busy Bee Tools store might be interested in the the collars (B26181128) that are on sale for $12. Looks like an easy way to make a chuck backing plate for some odd chucks you may have. Other sizes available.

That male threaded portion pictured, fits their wood lathe chuck and can be machined off.

            Threaded Lathe Inserts

An alternative to the Canadian Busy Bee source, is www.right-tool.com in the United States. It offers a variety of Steelex threaded lathe inserts. Each has three threaded holes that can be used for direct mounting of plates or fixtures.

The 1 1/2" x 8 Thread Per Inch insert that fits my Craftsman 12" Lathe costs $5.95, and an 8" cast Iron faceplate that mates with the insert is $17.95.

The two-piece combination may not be as sturdy as the original Craftsman single-piece threaded face plate, but it is more than good enough for my hobby projects and is 1/4 of the E-Bay cost.

Busy Bee also have those types of adaptors for around $6, but I think you will find them made from cast iron and not that useable if making up a welded assembly. An intergral flange allowing the use of substantial bolts would be my preference. Good enough though, for light duty turning as you suggest.
