5c to #30nmtb adapter?

I have an end mill sharpener that takes 5c collets - which is fine for doing straight end mills ,however shell endmills require removing from their 30 nmtb
shank and mounting on a straight arbor held in the 5c collet ....


so i am wondering if any one has heard of a 5c to 30 nmtb adapter to make life a bit quicker?

NMTB to 5C adapters seem rare. I've been looking for a 50 NMTB to 5C adapter on Ebay, but I've never seen one.

MT5 -> 5c and B&S #12->5C and B&S#11-> 5C are more common, because they're for the T&C Grinder workheads.

5C to 30 taper, from memory of their respective sizes wouldn't that have to extend out a long ways?

Why don't you make a straight shank holder for the shell mills to use while sharpening?

KO Lee Company may have the 50 to 5C. Some large work heads have the 50 taper.

It's not listed as an adapter in the KO Lee workhead catalog.

I have a couple KO Lee heads adapted down to 5C with factory sleeves, but not sure without checking what they started as.

Most of the KO Lee workheads are B&S#11 on one end, and 50 Taper on the other. So there's a B&S#11 -> 5c adapter that's listed in the KO Lee catalog (that I have on my KO Motorized Workhead).

Same deal with Cincinnati: 50 Taper on one end, and either MT5 or B&S #12 on the other. So the Cincinnati catalog has B&S#12->5C, and MT5->5C adapters listed, but not a 50 Taper -> 5C.

Oddly, there are quite a few 50, 40, 30 Taper -> TG100 and ER40 collet adapters on Ebay, so that might be alternative, in the off-chance that you haven't tooled-up with 5C collets.

Workholding vs. toolholding

I would love NMTB 40 & 50 to 5C holders but I am not holding my breath. 5C is considered a workholding tool, ER and TG collets are considered toolholding. I don't know why this is other than history maybe.

Not always. Hardinge makes special collets for tool holding. They have 4 slots rather than three, and a longer bearing area.

KO Lee uses 5C collets in most of their grinding fixtures.

Darex uses 5C in their end mil grinders.

Tool shanks are very close to nominal size, ie, a 1/2" end mill shank will usually be about .0005" or less undersize. That's close enough that a non-parallel closing collet like a 5C can be very accurate (depending on brand).

Exceptions

There certainly are exceptions to every rule, but 99% of 5C's are used in work holding applications. In the case of the Darex and KO Lee application they are still being used to hold the work, and not the tool which is a grinding wheel.

Got lathe?

I made an adaptor that takes R8 tooling in a 5C collet receptacle. I had to make a different drawbolt but it works great. I don't see how 30 MMT would be any different. Maka drawing to be sure everying fits OK.

5C to ER 32 ? and use a stub ?

You can now get 5C to ER 32 holders in the UK so you don't get any gaps in the range with ER's

Hmmm, in real money that comes out to about $58, not counting shipping from somewhere.

Are they any good? considering that a good collet, 5C Hardinge, costs about 30 bucks, how good could they be at that price?

In his initial post he said that he wanted to avoid having to pull them off the mount and put them on a straight shank.

Making a 5C to 30 adapter, near dead-on concentric and accurate (tapers) for sharpening, that would be a daunting project for me, but maybe that's just my newbie skills talking...
