  • 5c collet chuck

Been thinking about getting one of the new 5c collet chucks being advertised on the internet for $150.00. Anyone have any experience with these? Thanks Paul

The $500.00 one`s work good but i don`t know about the cheap ones. Kind of have been thinking the same thing . I know the Bison brand is good have used a few and even taken some apart to see inside. I saw some China made ones last night on E-Bay. would like to know my self.

I can't speak of the ones now on the net for sale. I bought mine serveral years ago, a Bison from KBC tools on sale for 300.00. It is a direct fit D1-4 back. I really like it and use it all the time. I did see the 150.00 one at littlemachineshop.com but I think it is plain back. What spindle mount do you have?

On edit I see littlemachineshops is 199.95, plain back.

I picked up a Chinese 5C collet chuck, plain back, plus a D1-4 mount plate for it from LatheMaster on E-bay. He was great to do business with and the chuck and plate's total cost with shipping was about $200. After a year of use on my Birmingham 14x40 I have no complaints with it at all. Works smoothly every time, seems to hold about the same runout of .002 inch or less each time I mount it. Of course I could have just gotten lucky and got the one in a bizzilion that was blessed by the chuck gods.

Smithy sells a 5C adapter in two versions for about $125 each.
One is D1-4, the other for standard 3N1 chinese flange mount
(4 bolt BCD with OD on the flange about 5"). Easy enough to
            adapt to threaded chuck.

                Try Littlemachineshop.com at:
                http://littlemachineshop.com/product...ProductID=3047

                Collet chuck adaptors are at:

I bought an ER-32 adaptor and I am very pleased with it indeed.

I only use 5C collets on my tool & cutter grinder. They are too restrictive for me as I use a mix of inch and mm stock. The ER collets have a holding tolerance of 1mm (0.040") which will cover all sizes from 2mm (0.080") to 20mm (0.800").

If the LMS 5C collet adaptor works as well as my LMS ER-32 collet adaptor you will be very satisfied with it.

I cannot speak highly enough of the service I got from LMS - and I live in Australia.
