  • HF Band Saw Welder $99

Anybody have and use a HF band saw blade welder?
I see an instore ad for $99
It says carbon steel up to 1/2
Has anybody welded a 1/2 bimetal with it?
Or should I just stick with silver solder?

Everything I've seen/read about them is they WONT do bi-metal....tho no first hand experience.
If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something........

I have one. I've only done a dozen blades or so, but it seems to do a fine job. The spring load is a little funky, if you are used to a Do-All style welder.

Mine did not come with a grinder motor, but it did have the switch, and the wheel guard. The manual doesn't show a motor. So, I got a REALLY cheap little bench grinder, cut one shaft off, and made an adapter plate to mount off the guard holes in the motor. Looks like there was one there from the factory. (I had to get a 220-120 transformer.) WIth all this extra crap inside, it weighs a lot, so I added a base of plywood, covered with old carpet. I just slide it out of the way.

I've never tried a bi-metal blade, but I do use Starret/Lennox/Simonds stock. So, far all the welds have been good, as long as the operator aligns the blade properly.

If you have some dead blade, I'll be glad to try some welds.

Are not bi metal blades called that because the tips are a different metal than the band itself? Where the band is just carbon steel? If so a band welder ought to work fine on bimetal.

Still I think I would silver solder them.

I remember seeing in the MSC catalog that they listed one welder for carbon steel and one for bi metal. They did not say what the difference was.

You can only weld carbon blades with a standard blade welder of any kind. it takes a special welder to do bimetal blades .Takes lots more power volts amps or something.I have tried it with the standard welder on Doall and Grob band saws and once or twice may be out of 10are 20 times it will work. But it is not suppose to.
