In my former life I designed electrodes for machining aluminum die casting dies. Great engineering, loved that job.

    Pop Mechanics version

I vaguely remember an article in Popular Science or Popular Mechanics (1950's or 1960's) that had a plan for a simple - crude - version of this. Used a couple of light bulbs (those old Edison style thingies that were the only game in town back then). Don't have the details; tried it out and it worked!

What type of power requirements are needed for something like these small sinker or tap burner EDMs?

LOL! I was reading Mikes links...thought that was pretty cool, sorta like another I'd seen.
Then I see it was Jims rig... I just like that thing.

    No, Like this..

    Servo drive unit.

burning a 3/16 square hole in a carbide insert as a test.
    About 35 minutes .140 deep.
Used Kerosene.. EDM Fluid is 2-3 times faster

    I broke a stud in a 0-80 die ...
The electrode is .032 brass shown here with fluid drained out

The simple, yet very effective Ben Fleming Control.

I have also built the Metal Disintegrater by Ben Flemming.

I built if for a specific job of removing a broken EZ-out and bolt from an engine block. It worked well and the block was saved. The customer payed for all the materials to build it plus payed to remove the bolt so it just cost me a little labor. It was very simple to build.
