  • Screw Machine Drill Bits

I need a good source for short drill bits. sets like 1/16 to 1/2 are fine. I have heard them called Screw Machine Drill Bits, Stubby Drill Bits and Jobber Bits.

I don't care what they are called, I just need a source for HSS or carbon steel short drill bits.

MSC, the drill bit sets section usually, also left and right hand. The set I bought cost me $43.00 for hss production grade including the case,I think that KBC has them too but harder to find in the cat.

I think I will order a set from KBC, these short drills are harder find. When I do something on my lathe, sometimes I don't have run for a standards size bit.

If anyone has a cheaper source, please let me know.

Resharpen your broken bits to any length you need. Or cut them down as needed. Been doing it for years.

If you need longer bits weld or braze on extensions.

In my experience this doesn't work well unless the web can be thined. Otherwise the drill center is too large.

Been cutting down bits for years and it works great.

IF a bit has TAPERED FLUTES, then the web may need thinning. But drills less than .5" seldom are tapered.

Flutes are tapered to increase the strength of a drill. This is important on large drills where heavy feed is used, to avoid flexing, which can break the drill and ruin the work.
