    season is heatin up!

    i'm buying boxes of crap lately...junk boxes, i figure if they weigh enough to get my money back on the scrap, they are worth going through at home.

        Garage sle stuff

        OK OK I wont let the purchase price be posted!! But you need to know that times are tough around my shop so it was a good buy. The tail stock measured 5" center height, just right for my dividing head. The x+y rotating table is only 8", so not huge, but I will keep it anyway. The electric motor appears to be new or very close to new. Might fit right on an asian mill??JIM

            Wish I could stumble across garage sales like that.

            The best I have done so far is a coffee can (one of the large ones) full of some old and some new files. Gotta keep lookin.

                    It's xy part that I don't get. The mill has the xy movement, it seems that the rotary table is just repeating it, unless it's being used on a drill press to lay out holes, but then it seems that it'd be easier just doing it by hand with the same precision (since drill presses generally don't have high precision bearings)

                      OK, the mill has XY in one coordinate set, so fix the RT at, say, 45° to the mill axis, and......

                        That little Palmgren table is intended for doing stuff like bolt circles on a drill press. The cross slide is below the rotary table, so you can set (or change) the radius as needed, or just use the cross slide. Great for a drill press that normally doesn't have a cross slide. But a cross slide below the rotary table is near useless on the mill IMO, though I guess you could get some use if you were desperate enough. I've got one of the 10" versions of this table, but really don't find that much use for my purposes.

                        Troykee and others made some beefy rotary cross slide for use on the mill. But these had the cross slide on TOP of the rotary table. This is great on the mill because you can use the top cross slide to set the axis where you want it on the part, then set the radius with the table, and move all over as needed. I really would like one of these, but the 15" Troykee I found weighed in at about 500 lbs (IIRC) and was just too big for the Bridgy...

                          But a drill press doesn't. and a lot of the aftermarket X Y tables were for that.
