    Hi All, I got the forklift going and while working on it found out (under some grease and paint) it had a 2 ton capacity when new. Problem is the Gray planer weighs 2 tons and needs to be moved soon (that is as soon as I get my shop addition done). So I decided to make some machinery skates with some of my imfamous extra wrist pins. I figure that at 7.125" long, 5.750" wide, 3.250' tall and with 1-1/8" diameter axles they should be able to handle some serious weight. At least one end of the Gray. Here are some pictures to ponder and please by all means tell me what I have done wrong.

    Squaring up the plate for the skates.


    They are spare wrist pins I have. They measure 5.25" long X 2.375" O.D.


    Here I am scoring the plate so it will have a clean and sharp bend at the right place.


    Here is a shot of the bend. It turned out very straight and with an even radius.

    More pictures

    The axles and skate plates are roughed out. Now just some gussetts, profiling and turn tables.


    Pretty much done for now, a shot of the bottom.


    Here you can see the axles are squared off sitting in slots with the retainer plates.

    At 7.125" long, 5.750" wide, 3.250" tall and 1.125" axles, these should be able to handle some weight.


    It has been a fun little project, I will be sure and let you all know how they work. No turn tables yet.

        Nice job Jay! Are the wrist pins straight enough for skate rollers?

        Are the axles just the turned-down ends of the skate rollers riding in those square notches?

          Thanks Mcgyver, it is nothing comprared to your work, but I wanted a straight bend that had a repeatable width, so they were both uniform.

          Thanks lazlo, I had six of them, so I sacraficed four for this job and they are probably straighter than the concrete I will pour and finish. I am saving two for cylindrical squares, when I can get back to that. I made the axles out of 1-1/8" drill rod, then milled the ends square so they wouldn't spin in the carriages. Jay

            Do you have bearings or bushings in axles/rollers, or is the drill rod just a slip fit?

              I think the axles are separate and "ride" inside the "rollers"......

              I made a slightly smaller set similar to that. Yours should work well, mine do.

              One thing is I did put a grease fitting in the end of each axle, and a small lube hole down the middle with an exit in the middle of the roller on the upper (unloaded) side.

              I suspect the rollers will carry a lot more load than the tops...... you might consider a "spreading plate" on top to move the load out to the sides. A big point load in the middle might dish the plate.

                The pins are pretty hard stuff, probably like chrome moly, but I am not sure. I figured since there is no speed involved and relative short distances I did not add bushings, a slip fit would work fine. I did not add grease zirks, but figureed to take them apart to lube. They shouldn't get used that much once I re-organize my space. I welded 1-1/2" X 1-1/2" X1/4" angle to the inside for a strecher and support. I guess I will see if it works. Good thing is it can be modified. Jay
