  • OT, Paint and tar paper?

Hello all, still working on my shop addittion. I need to brighten it up a bit in there, as the tar paper that is exposed under the roofing and behind the siding is sucking up all the light. Does anyone know if there is a paint that will stick to tar paper? I thought I would give it a coat to get through this year and then look to insulation and either sheet rock or pressed board next summer, when my budget will be flush again. Thanks for any comments and ideas, Jay

Staple heavy duty cardboard to your wall studs and nogs. Old packaging from appliance outlets is cheap(free). No painting, good insulation (heat and sound) and reasonable light reflection. Be carefull welding near tar paper it burns better than heavy cardboard .

Ken I have considered card board, I can get all I would need at the local United Groceries outlet for free. It seemed like a reasonable alternative and if it was still to dark, paint would stick to that. Thanks, Jay

If you don't mind something flammable and temporary, why not a couple rolls of butcher paper and a staple gun? Save ya the paint step...

Why don't you just use the sheet rock. You don't have to do the complete room - just the areas that need more light. You can paint it later.

Sheet rock isn't really that expensive at Lowe's or Home Depot because they sell it as cheaply as they possible can and hope you will buy all of the other items needed for your project at their store. Soooo...just don't buy the other items!

how bright do you want it to be? plain old interior white latex will "stick" to tar paper, but the paper will soak up a lot of paint before it provides a complete coating. if you just want it good enough for now, a few gallons will make it like a speckled white and gray. about ten years ago i painted the interior of my garage with plain white latex. the walls are concrete block, but the ceiling was some type of tar paper covered particle board. i only put one coat on and after all this time it still looks the same. it looks basically white.

Yes, heavy weight cardboard packaging has a lot of uses and benefits. I use the large sheets (that are wrapped about refrigerators etc). Cardboard allow me to easily drag myself about when working at ground level when I'm in the workshop or out in the garden. It stops the chill and damp as well. At the end it goes into the compost bin or the worm farm- the worms love that cellulose.

Oil base paint will stick to tarpaper just fine.
I know it sounds weird, but about ten years ago I did a series of paintings on tarpaper, with white One Shot sign paint, and they are still white and shiny, with no peeling or black showing thru, today.

I like metal building siding. Keep an eye out for odd lots and colors. Easy to put up, splice, paint. Non flammable and looks nice.

Costco and some of the big box stores have 24 inch wide Aluminum foil. Staple it on. Reflects heat and light.
