  • Building the ultimate die filer , using a small shaper , vertical

Have been making plans to Build the ultimate die filer , using a small shaper in vertical position. This would give easy stroke length adjustment which my present die filer doesn't have and with a VF drive speed control. I'm thinking the sawing , which I do occasionally using the overarm suport would be grealy enhanced.
After seeing so many "Vertical shapers" or slotters at such high prices on ebay I'm wondering if it might increase the range of usefullness of the shaper to have the ram travel vertically instead of horizontally

I would just build a scotch yoke to power the stroke. Variable stroke length is not the issue - power is. Any stroke length will work as long as its distance exceeds two or more times your tooth (crest to crest) spacing on the file used. This is just an observation - not gospel. Generally a 1" stroke is plenty.
