  • H/Freight made me feel good this trip.

I've had a few hobby bucks burning a hole in my pocket for a couple weeks so I headed over to the local H/F store Saturday with a 20% off single item coupon I printed off the web.

I've been wanting a small angle grinder so I picked one that said "All ball-bearing and needle bearing equipped" for $28.99. I found a 14 tpi bimetal bandsaw blade for my 4x6 saw for $17.99 and a quart of Evapo-Rust for $7.99. Dunno 'bout the grinder long term yet, it seems to run smooth. I do know the bandsaw blade will be good as I've had one just like it on the saw for over a year and it still cuts well.

When the cashier was ringing up I whipped out the coupon and asked if it would apply and she said sure, no problemo. It came out to $44 and change incl 9.25% sales tax and I thought, hmm, that's cheap. Not only did she apply the 20% on all 3 items, one of them must've been on sale for less than the shelf label price!

I tried the Evapo-Rust on my 4-jaw chuck and it worked great. I just put a couple layers of paper towel on the rusty areas and kept them wet during the the time I spent watching the Super bowl. I removed the paper when the game was over and voila, no more rust!

It don't take much to make me feel good these days.

I've got one of those angle grinders....I bought it for $19.95, 10 years ago, and expected to toss it in the trashcan if it failed on me. I've still got it, and it still runs just fine....Looks like it has kept working long after I did...

Some surplus end of line tool store near us were selling some angle grinders once for £5.00 including tax.

I thought WTF and called in, they had the rubberised grip and were made in Holland ? No disk fitted BTW.

Bought 5, two packed in quite early on, probably the switch as they have gone rear stiff and the others are still working.
I regard these as consumables and just throw them, lets face it is it worth trying to repair a switch on a £5.00 item.

Never seen them that cheap again but they do show up at £7.99 to £9.99 at various places.

Heck, here in SoCal, besides the State being broke and starting to issues IOU's for tax returns, there's talk of the gov't raising the local tax from 8.75% to 10% .

There'll be a LOT of people running for the local borders (AZ, NV, OR) to buy large ticket items to avoid the higher local taxes. e.g. building car stealerships next to the casinos at the CA <-> NV border

I guess without an income tax, that isn't too bad. But I'd still buy internet and save the 9.25%

Here in Taxachusetts, we pay 5% sales tax, 5.5% income tax, and fees for everything else from picking up garbage, to taking leaves to the dump, to tolls for many roads and bridges..etc,etc,etc.........

I've noticed that internet sales are starting to charge sale tax if your state has one. We don't have a sale tax here in Oregon Yet, but last week I ordered a birthday present for my daughter who lives in Washington. I order the present from Amazon who is in Nevada and had it sent to her in Washington. Washington has a sale tax and Amazon charged me the sales tax.

                        lugnut,
I believe that has do to with whether the company has a business presence in that state. From here:
                        http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...?nodeId=468512

"Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax."

I don't pay taxes on most internet orders, but because Amazon has a warehouse here in Kansas, I pay it on Amazon orders.

I buy (when I have money, which is not very often these days) on the web a lot too but usually from Enco when they have their free shipping deals. Shipping from most other sites is higher than sales tax on small orders in many cases.

Wow, how the times have changed: a H/F post that drifts off into tax discussions instead of the obligatory China-bashing.

Most likely said before and will be said again... there are plenty of sources of income, the failure is distributing the money, and the huge needless-overhead of the "Government" itself.

Oh and by the way, crime is up... revenue down... School resources are being cut WAY back but the Rochester Police Department needs YOU. Remember! MORE COPS, that's the way out of this quagmire!

Sorry about derailing your HF thread Dickybird. But you started the tax thing by mentioning you paid 9.25% sale tax on your cheap China junk. and that was probably more than it was worth.
                              Now are you happy!
