Just for giggles... assuming condition is "fair" and it powers up without obvious bearing or gearbox trouble what would be a good offer?

Oh I dunno ... I think you probably need that lathe, you just don't know it yet.

With minimal tooling and in useable condition, I'd pay 1500-2000 for it. Not sure what the more expierenced folks would say, but that seems like a fair price (not a bargain) for a big ol' Monarch like this one - again assuming that it is useable.

If you have the space---you can never have too "big" lathe! You can do little stuff on a big lathe but you can't do big stuff on a little lathe!

We have these at work from the '40s and early '50's. Almost indistrucatable!

Paid $1500 for the Axleson 20X48 with a 14'' 4 jaw chuck, taper attach and a 15 horse motor.

If the condition and price were at all reasonable I would haul it home immediately for it never to leave.............looks like it's already been moved down the lane awaiting the new owner.......LOL

looks real nice but im too lazy to look up what the spindle bore is, jackass selling it must be a dope or he would post the specs.

If you guys ever sell a tool, put some spec on the darn thing.

Had that same model lathe in the shop where I once worked. I made all sorts of stuff on it. It was heavy as ever and could take a good sized cut without much moaning. It had a taper attachment with it and I remember turning an adapter for my Van Norman with it.

The only thing that was lacking on that lathe was speed. While it had a good range for the diameter of material that it could hold, it was tough running small stuff with carbide. But then again we had some EE's in that shop that a fellow could do that on.

Monarch is still in Sidney Ohio and as of 5 years back was still making parts for that. Ours needed a cross slide screw. We sent one in and we had a new one within a few days.

If I could round one up, I'd buy it. As for the spindle bore, ours was right at 2" id if I recall correctly. We had some stock that I had to bring home to turn down so that it would fit in an old B&O turret. Seems that the Monarch would not take it and my SB could with a 2.3" throat.

I want a turret lathe this size... and a proper outbuilding to house it in.

I just got all this Smithy stuff cheap (CNC toys) I honestly have no room.

it's just sitting there waiting to rust. i'd offer the guy $500 cash and say you'll be right over with a trailer. what's the worst he'd say, no?

back in the day when i had space and more money and gas was $1.50/gal, i would've made the offer myself.

You could estimate the weight and ask your local scrap yard what they pay for light iron - offer some more if you want to be generous. It's a shame but that's where it will likely end up otherwise and the seller will have to haul it besides. They might consider the chuck and other parts tool steel and pay more for that if the seller bothers. At my yard I've seen it segregated and not.

I don't think many watchmakers will be bidding on this one.

"you can never have too "big" lathe!" is a catchy phrase but is not actually true and can be really misleading to newbies.

True - I think a lathe that size has a practical limit at 1". My 16" Pacemakers become unwieldy for small parts. It's not so much an issue of "feel" or sensitivity of the machine; really the issue is visibility. The machine is just so big you can't really get your head down over a tiny piece of work without risking getting it whacked off!

7" Shaper by Southbend, on factory stand, does not have the vise. 115 volts. $750.00......
have a 2nd shaper, 7" not on stand, not as nice, $300.00.
