  • OT: At last, an age old question is answered

What do dogs dream about? That is the question...

As some know I teach my dogs to talk. I don't mean to woof on command although I do teach them that too. I teach them to speak english. They can't say many words but there are a few that they can wrap thier mouth and vocal cords around. First one is "out". They can make a modified howl that sounds very close, "OOwww....". Beardog and the new kid, Snoopy both know how and when to say this appropriately. Beardog isn't a big talker though.

Snoopy, well, you can't shut him up. He picks up words like a parrot but knows exactly what they mean. He can say "hello" so clearly that it sounds like another person speaking in the next room. He spooked my wife good one day when she was in the garden by sneaking up behind her and saying "Helllooo". Every morning when he comes back in from his fence marking chores he makes the rounds between my wife and me saying hello several times. He can be moody though and I must of done something to piss him off because he didn't talk to me for a week lately. He has also been working hard at teaching me Doggish but I must not have the accent quite right.

Anyway, one thing I taught him was to say "ummm hmmm (high intonation on the first, falling on the second, as if to mean yes)" to mean food. He says it just like a child would say it with mouth closed and sounds exactly the same. He will come up to me and sit there to get my attention and when I glance at him he will hum "Ummm Hmmm". He wants his breakfast snack. If he is really hungry he will put an extra emphasis on it like "UMMM HMMM hmmmmm".

SO, the last two nights while I have been working on the computer he has been in the room sound asleep. Both last night and the night before while he was dreaming came from him with absolutely no mistake... "Ummm Hmmm" and "UMMMM HMMM hmmm".

So now we know what dogs dream about: FOOD.

I know what my one dog dreams about, that would be to see Spike our cat (our $1400 cat, but that's another story) close by when I was not around, I can tell that is so by the way he looks at him with that "just wait sucker" look

Is he the reason the cat cost $1400?

        Old Dog Trick?

What was he thinking?? as he spooked my wife good one day when she was in the Kitchen by sneaking up behind her and sticking his nose up the back of her dress. She Jumped 3 feet in the air. I tried not to laugh too hard in front of her.

I took my furry buddy to a shrink and they hooked some fancy smancy helmet up to the dog to analyze his dreams since he kept awaking in the middle of the nite and wanted to go out to the shop.

Here is what was on the dogs mind.

Now I know why he misses me when im gone a month or more at a time.

No, doubtful there would be any Vet bill with that

Every time I look at Spike I see a nice surface grinder

I suspect he was dreaming about the problems he has teaching you to think he can talk. I have a cat that, since he showed up here some years ago, has been teaching me to think he's the center of the universe. I'm almost there . He believes it completely.

Evan, can't thank you enough for the post. It clears up something that's been eating the hell out of me lately. Our new lab kept coming up behind us and mumbling something like "hell no". If you asked him to repeat it he'd just shake his head in disgust and walk away. As it turns out he may have been just saying "hello". Thought I was going nuts as I know damn well I didn't ask him anything that could have pis$ed him off. Admittedly, he's only 9 weeks old so we are still competing for alpha dog. He's still in the lead as no ones smacked the pretty off his face yet but when he gets as ugly as me he won't have all that pretty to hide behind.

Thank you to our families of soldiers, many of whom have given so much more then the rest of us for the Freedom we enjoy.

Heh. I know a lot of people are not going to believe this story but it isn't a story. All this really happened.

Here is the talking dog. His paws are blurred because he is doing his YES PLEASE!! gesture. He invented it himself, I didn't teach him it. He sits up on his haunches and wave his paws in front, crossing them twice. He always does it exactly the same. He is really unlike other dogs. If you teach him how to do something he goes away to another room or outside and he practises it. Then he starts to embellish on it, adding his own touches.

For instance, I taught him to lie down and roll over. Well, instead he does a sort of judo manoeuvre where he throws himself into a roll from a standing position and ends up back on his feet. He is also the only dog I have ever seen that doesn't do the circling bit when he lies down. Instead, he retracts his feet so fast the he literally falls to the floor with a great big THUMP that shakes the windows. If I am in the downstairs shop and he wants to get my attention he knows not to come down and surprise me. Instead he finds something heavy and starts dropping it on the kitchen floor which it just above me.

Anyway, here he is asking for a treat.

                          OK.

I repeated his "hello" right at the beginning so you won't miss it. Then he asks to Rarr Rarr which is how he says Run Run meaning he wants to go for a run. The little "woof" to the side means yes which is pretty obvious. Unfortunately there are a lot of human sounds that a dog can't make with his vocal structure or he would be talking in sentences.

Evan, I'm sorry, but I won't consider the issue settled until you teach him the words for "girl dog" and "sex". Then lets see what he really dreams about.

Too late for him, he's a castrotti. Maybe I can teach him to sing falsetto?
