  • Chuck size in 9" SB

I need a three jaw chuck for my little 9" South Bend lathe. Is there a rule of thumb for the diameter of the chuck? 6" is probably the standard size, but an 8" would have more spinning mass. This isn't really a matter of work piece size; I don't normally turn large items (but you never know). I can get either size back plate with 1 1/2"-8 threads. Cost isn't much different.

    Words of wisdom?

A six inch three jaw would be the max you would want on that machine. Even then, as you get out to the maximum capacity of the chuck, the lathe itself, will tell you it would like to be bigger.

    I went with a 4 inch 3 jaw.

The factory 3 jaw was a 5" chuck. The factory 4 jaw was a 6" chuck.
Here is my 5" Bison on my SB 9" lathe.
