  • Question about boring head

I have a Criterion 3" boring head and was wondering if i can use it as a flycutter too or should i not since it is a precision head ? Thanks

I suppose the answers are yes and yes.

The Criterion will work fine as a flycutter as long as you don't get too ambitious or crash it. On the other hand, a flycutter is so cheap to either make or buy, why take the risk?

      why take the risk?
      Exactly...(Especially with a Criterion)
A simple fly cutter can easily be made from any piece of scrap barstock lying around. A fun little project.

If the tool is locked, Damage is very unlikely.
The weak spot is usually the tool bit.
Fly cutters do offer much better tool angles which means more agressive work capability.

I would use a Boring head in a pinch, with a short toolbit, but the production rate would suffer.
