If the tool is locked, Damage is very unlikely.
The weak spot is usually the tool bit.
Fly cutters do offer much better tool angles which means more agressive work capability.
I would use a Boring head in a pinch, with a short toolbit, but the production rate would suffer.

why take the risk?
A simple fly cutter can easily be made from any piece of scrap barstock lying around. A fun little project.

I suppose the answers are yes and yes.
The Criterion will work fine as a flycutter as long as you don't get too ambitious or crash it. On the other hand, a flycutter is so cheap to either make or buy, why take the risk?
