Hi oldtifflie and others, Im wondering about oldtiffles recent post and the picture http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a.../I-Fanger3.jpg

What kinda holder/toolbits are those? iv never seen that kinda insert system before, I assume they are HSS inserts.

They are made by a Swiss firm and are bloody expensive.

I don't know what the tool-steel is but its reasonably easy to grind )by hand to the template) and is tough and holds a very good edge on some tough material in the lathe.

The corrections for tool form and shape/profile for the tool rakes and clearances are applied as part of the manufacturing process.

Here is the parting tool "at it" in a situation that might have made the job pull out of the chuck or a TC parting tip fail or fracture. I just "went for it" and ploughed it in.

The only limitation is the tool travel/range.

I just tack-welded it to a bit of spare rectangular section steel tube that I had and then finished it off on the band saw - then recovered the off-cut and RHS by grinding out the tack welds.

I guess I can't expect (too) much (or any at all?) from a Chinese lathe and chuck and a European tool though.

Must have been just a fluke or good luck - I don't recall it being a "set-up" either - must be poor or selective memory!!!
