  • Grinding a button for button rifleing

    Greetings,

I need to grind a number of football shaped buttons in carbide to use to button rifle barrels. I have a Chinese Universal Tool and Cutter Grinder (similar to a UNION Tool and Cutter Grinder) but cant think of how to set up my machine or even if this is possible on it.

Does anyone have any suggestions ?

    Thanks and Regards

Can you post a drawing of the button(s)? How many of each?

are you pulling or pushing the button, and does it make a difference?

It is football shaped, around an inch (25mm) in length. The diameter at the largest point would depend on the bore or grove diameter and example could be .243 (6 mm).

Pushing the button is easier as you do not have to attach it (by silver soldering) to the push / pull rod but the downside is that the push rod will buckle once inside the bore and could cause it to be marked. We are pull buttoning.

In the past I used a small piston grinder as a cylindrical grinder to grind the ball shape, I no longer have the machine and can not find a similar one so now I need to make an alternative plan.
