  • 50HP Head Stock!!!

In my quest for a CNC mill I went and visited a shop in Houston. They wear assembling a Russian lathe. Man that thing was big!! Six foot swing 50hp headstock and 15hp cross slide mill attachment. Only got one Pic.

I never will understand why people will stand there with one hand trying to balance a heavy piece of machinery underneath an overhead crane.i

50hp does not seem like much for a 6ft swing...Looking at the size of the headstock it should be 150hp...
          Precision takes time.

Yeah, but it is at like, 4 RPM, so torque is off the map!

deeman: its because watching one guy holding onto it is less scary then watching it spin around.

Black_Moons...a 15 foot piece of rope works for me until it gets close to the floor.

Ropes are part of safe lifting.. but only part... You can't push with one....
Putting track frames on a D9 Cat is not a place for a 15 ft rope...

Too many surfaces to slide up, over, under, and align...

Keeping away from gravity zone is about all you can do...

I try not to lift anything more than 2 inches higher than needed, so less distance to fall... Can't plan on which corner of a load may break free and which direction it will go... so I just try to keep a 45 degree angle clear zone around work....

Besides keeping the thing from spinning I like to keep a hand on the load so that I always know where it is to my body. I won't accidently lose track of where it is and get part of my body under it. Also, if it starts to fall my hand is on it to feel it first, then I'll be able to push myself away (or have the load push me away if I lock my arm).

Torque is not everything doozer...it takes h.p. to remove metal
                      efficiently.

Exactly, the 54" bullard I used to run had at least 50 h.p. maybe 75 h.p.

I think this has 50 squirrel power. Maybe a couple more after some R&R time between breaks.
