  • Boring head adapter

I made an adapter so I can use my existing 3" boring head with 1 1/2" x 18 threads in a 50 taper 2" end mill holder. It sure has been nice going from R8 to 50NMTB.

    • Just a small cutter I made, worked ok, but needed more clearance ground behind cutting lip.

      • Yes, always a potential issue. Nice looking work.

It looks like you placed the cutting edge about on the centerline of the tool. Raising it above center will get you more clearance with a change towards negative rake on the top - something of a tradeoff. It looks like you've got an insert with a chip breaker groove that might get you more positive rake, depending.

        • Thanks - good comments - I may try shimming it to raise it above centerline!

Make your shim out of Unobtanium®. I made one of those a few yrs. ago & it beats like Benny Goodman's band. Cuts pretty good but man it does some hammering!

              • Glenn.

You may be better off with a "TP--" insert as they have 11 degrees clearance. The "TC--" style have only 7 degrees. This is more critical witth a small diameter cutter.

                • Geoff,

Thanks - I might even have one of those in the cabinet, I'll give it a try next time I cut a dovetail.

                  • Plasma cutting guide - I actually used this to cutout the rotor for the brake on the lathe (before I had the CNC plasma), works well.

                    • I modded the Glacern a bit by drilling and tapping the 1/2" bolt to accept a #10-32 - I then made this adjustable angle bar that can be locked down to do repeat work. Also tapped the side of the jaw and installed the flip up stop to hold 0,0. (not my ideas, but they work great)

                      Cheers,

                      • Now that's a good idea.
I've been replacing jaws on my lathe with aluminum so I can true them up and prevent marks, don't know why I never thought to drill and tap them, too.

                        • Hey guys,

Here is a speed vise that I made - it can be used vertical / horizontal or flipped to the opposite side - it works really well, and was cheap to make.

It pivots at the end and slides fast to locate the part under the drill - the all-thread clamps tightly locking the part in place, and you only need to hold the handle with the left hand while drilling to keep it in place. I milled some steps in the jaws to act as quick parallels.

I used it on the DP for a while until I bought a 8" Heinrich vise (love that thing) and now this has been re-pourpused to bandsaw duty, as it works really well for holding / pushing / and guiding parts on the vertical bandsaw.

Oh, and that Coors Light box is not mine, but you can see a Kokanee box next to it, that one is mine

                          Cheers,
