    I love that tool.
Make me one too while you're at it. [emoji16] I'll take the first one. We all know how much better the second part turns out (NPI) so you can keep that one[emoji12]

    • I am new to this thread and appreciate all the great ideas. It has given me motivation to get busy again in the garage.

This is my first attempt to post so I hope the pictures work out. I built this arbor press many years ago in my high school machine shop class.

            • Thanks Max. My father enjoyed building clocks so used the small tools quite a bit. Here is a tool he made for aligning the gears.

That is the nicest depthing tool I've ever seen. I'm into pocket watches, myself.

                  Arrrrgghhh!
I was looking at arbor presses at Horror Freight this morning, wishing they had a smaller one for a project I have coming up... now you've done it, gotta fire up Autocad and draw one up.

                  Seriously nice work!

                  • So that's what it is called...a depthing tool. Here is another picture from the other side and one of the skeleton clocks he made. He had to make several tools including gear cutters and as you can see, there was a lot of filing involved so he made a filing machine out of an old fridge compressor. I will post pictures of the file machine once I find it in may garage.

Very nicely done. I love the clock.

                      • That depthing tool: it looks as though it was made from castings. Yes?

                        Cheers

                        • The arbor press: one of the more elegant things I have seen here for a long time. A work of art.

                            • Thank you for the kind words. The depthing tool was milled from brass blocks and other scraps. We rarely purchased new material but for some reason the pile always seemed to grow.

My high school had great shop classes and excellent teachers. The equipment was old but well maintained and our machine shop teacher made sure to give us projects that would enable us to use all of them (even the small screws were hand made). I believe our first project was a meat tenderize which gave us experience on the old shaper. A gear puller which required heat treating was the second one. I have vivid memories of him standing by the tool crib with a can of oil which he would squirt onto everyone's hands before you were allowed to touch any of the equipment.

                              • My high school gear puller and meat tenderizer. My mother used to keep the meat tenderizer by the front door to welcome anyone trying to break in Thankfully she never had to use it for that purpose.
