Without a great place to put an indicator on my BP clone, I bought a $5 Gopro clamp from ebay. Its very sturdy and clamps strong onto the edge where the bottom of the quill depth stop is. I relocated the quill lock to the backside which works brilliantly as now unlocked is the down position, so gravity won't work to lock your quill on you.

Drilled the 1/4-20 hole out and tapped M8-1.25 to install a universal arm. Works great and lots of reach, no rotation issues from the spindle and no tool removal, height adjustments, etc needed.

MattiJ got it right, that's the one. I think maybe I had searched "gopro pipe clamp" or something and found it. Made from extruded aluminum and what seems like plated steel. I already ordered a 2nd, use TBD.

Made a slide hammer. Internal M5 thread on one end plus external M12 thread and an internal M8 thread on the other side. M5 because that's what's used on the machine I was removing blind tapered pins from (pre-made with M5 threads for removal). Figured an M12 thread would be good thread in order to fasten various things as need arises. And with an M12 nut on it works as a stop. The other side got an M8 thread because that's what's used in in vice grips (on the ones I got), so I can attach a vice grip.



Real happy with the finish on the handle. Cheap chinese carbide, WNMG-0804. Tried grinding a HSS shear tool and was disappointed with the result, but this insert gets a good result most of the time.

The shank on this almost makes it too big for my lathe, but it's the thickest shank of anything of my tools, probably helps.

I've seen WNMGs used in videos but I was always put off by people saying they were only suitable for much higher power lathes. What sort of horse power are you pushing on yours with good results?

Very nice. 1950's pictures at the top were going to get me to comment that they don't make them like they used to - where how it looked was an important part of the design. Then I scrolled down and say that by the 70's they'd gone boxy like the current stuff. Nothing good-looking comes from the 70's.....just ask my wife!
I'm running an import Sieg SC4 which is spec'd for about 1.3HP (1000W brushless DC) so I might have to give those a try - at worst, 6 edges per insert is better than 2!

Nose radius gives usually good hints if the insert is suited for small cuts in low power lathe. WNMG0804-04 is 0,4mm nose radius, about as small as you want for steel turning in smallish lathe.

And these are razor sharp, takes easily 0.01mm cut and works even on a hand-cranked lathe if you want:

Don't attempt heavy cuts on steel, edge geometry and carbide grade is not suited for that. Weirdly enough same carbide grade works for hard turning HSS if you flatten the top on diamond wheel.
