  • How to determine which chuck is better

I have two 5” three jaw chucks. Both are Chinese. I would like to mount the better of the two on my 11 x 26 lathe. One came with the Grizzly G9972z 11" x 26" lathe and the other I bought from LMS for a 7" x 10 mini lathe. What should I be looking for to determine which is the better made chuck? Both chucks have inside and outside jaws.

Check the jaws for wiggle and looseness. If you have them mounted, chuck up a piece if something round (a ground tool shank) and check for run-out. It would be nice to check the run-out at multiple chucking diameters to check the linearity of the scroll. Also check the gripping surfaces of the jaws for damage or evidence of a part being pulled out.
