    O1 or 4130 or 4140 should work fine. Even an old leaf spring if it fits your dimensions, this would probably be either 5160 or 1060-90. Heat treat and temper to about 50RC and they should wear very well without being brittle.
    You can heat it until a magnet won't stick to it then hold that temp for 5 minutes or so, quench in the oil of our choice. Then temper.

    I have some front guages to make for a shear. The originals are heat treated. I can get them heat treatedm but i do not know what kind, or grade of material i should use.
