Got up early and dropped the pontoon boat off in the yard on cribbing so I could use the trailer to go pick up some 24' long sticks of 3x6" 1/"4 wall tubing to build my sawmill with. Guy I bought them of actually had a sawmill, used to be a toolmaker too, (long since retired) and we actually knew a lot of mutual people so it was a nice chat with a good ole timer. I like meeting guys like that. It's like looking into the future in a way.

Then I came home and played with the plasma cutter cutting out frame plates for the heep out of some 1/8". That little "toy" sure makes quick work of stuff like this.

Started hailing/snowing so I came back in the house for a break. Really wish I had a shop to work indoors on stuff like this.

If you had a sawmill you could saw out the material for a nice shop so you could work indoors.

If you were closer I might let you borrow my sawmill.

Today I have cleaned out an area for a future milling machine, put castors on a tool cabinet, reorganized the workshop and had a general clean up, also disassembled a router table I never used. I've gotten a lot done today.

Finally installed a fireplace cover my wife picked out in early spring. It was too wide, too tall, and the inner doors hit the brick when attempting to open. Built a frame out of bed rails, cut, welded, and painted to match. Made a make shift bolt to bolt hanger system and used some brick/mortar anchors to attach it all to the brick.
Learned 2 things.
1) I will never be a mason.
2) Enforce a mandatory measure twice before you buy rule on ALL future home purchases I'm expected to install.

I gotta say, it does look good. NOW!

It got up over 70F today, so I pulled the front door that I had stripped paint from weeks ago, and stained it. It's drying now, waiting to be reinstalled, hopefully before it gets too dark.

I always use a "prestain", and I have no idea why the stain makers always sternly warn you against thinning the stain..... I thin stain and apply multiple coats so that I can get the shade I want.... been doing it for years with good results. Seems to work far better than what the makers say. Probably real woodworkers have super good reasons for that, but since I am a hack woodworker, I don't know any better and it seems to work well.

Prepared for a trip to the USA, flying tomorrow from France via Iceland and over to Washington, then on business for a few days. Last time I was in the US a few weeks back I managed to fit in a short trip to NASA, so this time it might be the aeronautical museum and a couple of other technical places.

Still waiting on the second shed, it is dark out now. Took delivery of shed number one. Very sketchy history and nearly lost my deposit and took a lot of detective work to get the deal done. Note that the way it was delivered, on a broken down boat trailer with flat tires taken down the road, amazing!

McFluffy - Washington DC or Washington state? If the latter the Boeing museum in Seattle and Ligo at Hanford are well worth the trip. Not 100% sure Ligo is open to the public (went there with my daughter on a school trip), but worth asking.

Me, I spent all of yesterday replacing the bearings in my front loading dishwasher. 3-4h to disassemble (lots of photos), probably same again to clean (yuck) and then an hour or two to replace the bearings and reassemble. Nice'n'quiet now and I have a spare, mostly serviceable 6306zz bearing. Only the front one (closest to the drum/ seal) was shot, the back one feels pretty good. While the washer was out, I cleaned all the lint out of the dryer, which puts my mind at rest. Both bought with the house, looks like both are ~10yrs old. Then I cleaned the filter in the vacuum cleaner.

Now, sort of, I'm grading some papers. Shows how much I want to do that when compared with the above

attached two bogus strong boxes to the workbench. one contains quarters, one holds the Dremel tools.

you don't know it's not worth the effort until you have made the effort. and I know where my Dremels and my quarters are.

That what I was also thinking.

First I was wondering do they really have also some other type than front-loading dishwashers in US and then I was starting to think how big dishwasher needs 6306 size bearings for pump motor.
Must be some american model with 20 horsepower motor to need that bearing size

I cut the dovetails on the cross slide of my Atlas QC10. Now they are straight, smooth and I can tighten the gibs a lot more than when the dovetails had concave wear in the middle.

I did the compound a few weeks ago with similar good results.

Cross slide was a challenge because my mill travel was just barely enough to accomodate the cut in X direction and also tight in the Y for lathe carriage clearance with the mill 'column'.

Setup a new iPad pro. My old iPad Gen 2 has been cranking away for the last 7 years and never bothered to upgrade. The kids have new iPads but Dad hasn't had a new iPad in 7 years. Edit: I thought my gen 2 was from 2008 but it's 2011.
