It is 4° F here and dropping. -18° wind chill with 33mph gusts. The ground is frozen and my wife chose a spot at the base of a 2' tree with lots of roots. But, I made a promise to the dog so I was keeping it. I did have to take a couple of breaks to thaw hands and feet out. The pain is really something when the hands start to thaw out. RIP Strawberry.

Last night it went down to about 8 degrees F, and with the wood stove going strong the inside temperature downstairs was just over 40F and in the bedroom the baseboard electric heat barely got over 60F. By this morning the bedroom was just under 50F, and downstairs was about 28F. I had left the water running in the kitchen sink at a bit more than a steady drip, and the hot and cold pipes did not freeze.
However, I went out for a couple hours (by now up to a balmy 16F), and I had forgotten to resume the drip, so when I turned on the taps, there was just a trickle getting past the frozen blockage. A few minutes with a heat gun on the exposed pipes restored normal flow, and I proceeded to build another fire to "warm" up to about 35-40F. I know that the problem is that the heat tapes on the pipes were not installed properly by a contractor who had installed the sink, but I haven't had the ability to tackle the job until recently (after multiple orthopedic surgeries), and I had other priorities last summer and fall.
So I've been burning a lot of compressed wood fuel blocks, as well as making quite a dent in the woodpile from JUly's removal of a large wild cherry tree and heavy trimming of a huge sycamore next to the house. I split a few easy logs, and then tackled a tough, gnarly chunk, eventually getting it to split ala Lizzie Bordon (40 whacks):
I also got started on a large round wild cherry log, using a 6-8 pound maul (which probably needs sharpening - machining content...)
Now that I have a good fire going, and the bedroom up to 60+, I'm attempting to work on some of the images I scanned from slides. Here is a picture I took in April, 1971, of a girl I knew from my early Koinonia days, at Rocks State Park. She was a high school student at St Timothy's private school, and probably jail-bait, as well as out of my league, but it was cool to dream! Anyway, a split shot of the original scanned image with default adjustment, and an attempt to better color balance and sharpen using GIMP. Looking forward to spring!!
