  • Feeling quite pleased with myself. Dug out the plastic guitar a while back as I thought (probably incorrectly, but *shrug*) that my son might enjoy Guitar Hero. Got it all set up and him excited and....the guitar didn't work; just flashed it's light anaemicly and went off. Did a bit of Googling and found that someone else has been through this and it was the capacitors on the power input that go faulty. EBay'd some 220 an 47uF for a couple of quid. Finally got round to desoldering the old ones (with a touch of swearing) and soldering the new ones in. Was pleasantly surprised to find it worked. Next will be the let-down when I find it's far more painful to play it with him than I anticipated!

      • OOOOhh! Me like! Back in the dark ages, The company I worked for built a new truck Shop. I had some input in the design, and visited the project dailey. we spec'd the air system to be copper tube. The plumbing contractor Put a apprentice kid on the air job. the owner told me, just wait and see, this kid is a master. I worried for maybe half an hour, and then realized the old man was right. Jason was a master and had yet to shave his first time. Hope this Man is teaching the next generation now.

          • It is labeled as a "Swivel Metal Cutting Band Saw", which appears to be the same as this HF model which is shown working in horizontal as well as vertical positions:

From the other video I found:

            • Today I heard from a friend that his kitchen filled with smoke when he ran the dishwasher. He suspected a bad connection since the wires sparked when he took off the access plate and jiggled them.

I popped over with my tool kit and found about 2 inches of insulation burned off the wires that supplied power. The last person to work on it wired the electrical cord to the internal wiring using twist on wire nuts that were too small. All three (hot, neutral and ground) were taped together. The wires were basically wrapped loosely around each other. All three wire nuts were either melted or scorched. I spliced in new wire where needed and replaced all the wire nuts.

According to the IR thermometer, there was a virtually no rise in temperature during use after the repair.

As a thank you, I was given a motor operated Garage Gator suspended shelf for my garage. Motorized, no less!

At the end of the project, there is a profound difference between spare parts and left over parts.

I did the same on Monday as well. Good times.

                • I plowed snow a lot yesterday. Something like 15-18" fell. All the snow removal equipment worked like they should and no breakdowns!

One that shocked the hell out of me was the one lonely 1980's walk behind blower. I picked it up for $75 years ago, got it running, and put it in the machine shed. Yesterday I needed just such a machine. So I pull it out of the corner, put gas in the tank, attach the 110v cord and push the button. After only a few seconds it popped off and never quit since. It is a beat up neglected little thing but she still chooches I guess some would say. I was not expecting it to start without all kinds of help from a gas bottle down the carb. I didn't even check the oil, maybe I should do that today just to make sure it is full for the next time.

                  • We might just get very lucky this year in the Boston area as the total snowfall for the season so far is only ~5 inches. Half of it came yesterday so it was only ~2.5" for the year before the snow fell yesterday. We're about ~17 miles from Boston and got more snow but still ~5" seems like nothing for Boston totals this time of year.

                    • We've had some nutty weather here this year. A dusting of snow one day, and a few days later set an all time record high of 80°, then another few days and we're back in the 30's. All in the space of a week or so. It was 35° this morning, 53° right now, and supposed to get up to 62° this afternoon. No wonder everybody has the sniffles.

                      • Since we are talking Snow. In Kirkland WA, just East of Seattle we e 17 inches of snow from two events. Spent the whole day Tuesday feeding a fire in the fireplace due to a power outage. We go several years in a row without snow so a large portion of the population is not prepared.

Today I get some shop time. My machines work much better with electricity.

                        • Today I leveled the new lathe using my Starret 8" precision level. The lathes stand has leveling pads that made it very little effort. Also cleaning and oiling the lathe. It is a VERY nice lathe.

Just about had a heart attack when I priced 4" round steel at the local place. Luckily Ebay saved the day. I do feel bad for the postman though.

                            • Got some 4" bar stock in the post too. Mine's alu though so not quite as weighty. Postie didn't seem to struggle with a lump of 2.5" steel this morning though.

                              • found a dump truck stub axle at the side of the road the other week, then shortly after rode past a dump truck. May have been a coincidence.. Bike handled a bit funny, but got home in one piece several pounds of sweat lighter
