When I was a kid, out with my parents at a restaurant, I ordered a hot roast beef sandwich with gravy, and I just picked it up and chomped down on it, with gravy running down my hands and face. Well, it was a sandwich, wasn't it?

There has been some discussion as to what defines a sandwich. Two pieces of bread with something in between? Does that apply to a hot dog? Or a sub/hoagie/grinder/hero? Open face sandwich? English muffin? Bagel? Folded pizza? Calzone? Stromboli?

I liked one of the examples of an open faced egg sandwich. No, that's eggs on toast. I worked in a "restaurant" in London for a while years back as a "sandwich chef" and one of the menu items was an open sandwich. It's real purpose was to charge the investment bankers who ate there (think $40 for a sandwich) more money for a sandwich AND make them finish the final assembly into a sandwich themselves. Talk about suckers.
