Started taking the head of my mill apart to investigate why it rattled AFTER it came to a stop. Had visions of a ball from a bearing rattling about... although the wheels, so to speak, didn't seem to be falling off. Turned out that the drive pulley is retained on the motor shaft with a metal disc screwed into the shaft. That screw had come mostly undone and the disc was spinning around the screw after the motor had stopped. Dab of thread lock should sorted.
Got my essence of hinge through the post today. "Straight shank essence of hinge" to be specific. You may know them as 2MT reamers....but the customs declaration obviously doesn't lie!
Dismantled my tailstock and beat the drill chuck out of it. Gave it a bit of a clean up with the reamer but I'm not sure it did a lot. Cleaned up the thread which was rough as and the shaft which was badly machined out of condensed barbed wire. Could do with a bit more work when I have time. Found the bore of the tailstock isn't exactly round either and they tend to bind up when you are trying to eject the drill chuck. Also found a slot of rust starting on the female taper which is bound not to have helped. I've had my shop for a few years now and never had anything start to rust. Not sure why it's suddenly started being an issue but I've turned up the heating a bit.

Started to make something useful out of the scrap piles of end mills/bits etc. (well at least I repurposed one endmill!)
I was finally able to get some quality coal (500lb) and figured I’d try my hand at making a knife. Now I have an excuse to get 2x72” belt sander!
I left a bit thick, I didn’t want to burn it.

That's some nice metal work there plastikosmd. Forging a large HSS endmill to that shape takes some skill. Did you use power hammer and other automated tools to forge it, or did you do it by hand?

I finally pruned my crepe myrtle tree. I should have done it during the cold snap last month but I was sick for most of the month, then when I started feeling better we had daily rain. I'm a Californian so I don't work outside when it's cold or wet, much less both.

Went down to the shop..... did some work and then started walking through and finding all the thing which have no home, or should nt be where they are. Heck yeah! If you can do that with just a hammer and end mill, you deserve a 2x72 sander.
I made another carbide insert holder for my Suburbanized fly cutter. It's 5" and holds a APMT/APKT insert.
Assembled my new Wen 4x6 metal band saw and gave it a test drive with the included 14tpi blade then a 8/12tpi blade. Also attached a mister/coolant nozzle and plumbed that in.
Left the phone in the house so pictures may show up tomorrow.

As this was a relatively new experience I am surprised about how bright the coals/fire is. Do people wear sunglasses when they do this? It is hard to judge the color but I kept feeling like I was staring at the sun too much

I went down to my temporary shop , one day left, then I got to start to move my crap out..
Shoveled a bit of snow.
Tried picking up heavy end of my 9 inch South Bend.. ugh. .
Lucky the loading ramp was excavated and is now ready for use. 8 or 10 inch rise to the pickup tailgate.. nice
Had a beer. .
Kid came by to work on his bike and one of my old bike shop customers..
Had a beer..
Helped the kid with his CB 750.. had to whip up a drift to drive out steering races.. made a drift on south bend,cleaned up his axle. More beer and Fireball.. mmmm.. drove Another race out of another frame. .no joy..
Another visitor. . Got stuck on kids bike.. have to dig out a useable lower race tommorow.. go to my frame stash..
All in all pretty good day, bit of bike work, bit of visiting, a bit of machining, a few bevvys..
Damn.. gonna miss that place.. it was my shop from 96 ish to 2015..Comment
