  • Unboxed the new vice and marveled at the beauty. Still have to clean, lube and adjust according to the manual.

Here's a comparison to the old Brown & Sharpe. Both are open to maximum.

    • Before demounting the old vise, I modified the bump knurl tool that came with my QCTP. I cut the tabs off that hold the knurling wheels and made an insert and new stepped bolt. By the way, those tool holders are as hard as rock. Had to use the 14" friction saw to cut the tabs off.

Very nice! I think it's safe to skip the cleaning step though You're only going to make it more dirty if you try to clean it at this stage

EDIT: Do you also have a drill press? If so, throw the B&S on the drill press now unless you've got something as good already on the DP.

        • You're probably right about cleaning. I already have a DP X-Y vise. I'll probably demote the old vise BACK to bench duty. The old Bridgeport vise that came with the mill is so bad, it's not even working well on the bench. Also, those "goobers" on the old vise are not from me.

I cut it off twice; it's still too short

              • This weekend, a new AXA holder rack (ran out of dowels for now), polishing up my furnace project and most of the way through a base-mount fine adjust for an import indicator arm.

Are you sure? What about when you drove the knee into the head -- didn't that leave a huge goober somewhere?

Is that a larger version of this:

For about 10 bucks it's pretty good. A few more turns of the knob between free and locked than a Noga and the finish isn't as good but for under a tenth of the price, it's not bad. Think the minni mag base might need a lap as it can spin (but not slide) so might need to be flatter.

At a going rate of what, say one beer per square foot, that's gonna be a fair few beers he owes you!

It's the larger version, more like this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tutoy-Unive...indicator+base

They usually come with a fine adjust on the tip, but its junk. I replaced the tip with a tip from the smaller ones, which usually don't have any adjustment features. Then I made this adjust for the base.

I have a mini as well, I milled the base flat as it was basically belt-sander finished. A requirement for proper use.

LOL... I'll never live that one down. Yeah but the goober is inside the quill bore and "invisible" so it doesn't count if you cant see it.

No damage to the vise since the spindle was over the jaws.
