  • Splined shaft dims 1 3/8" 6

I want to mill a male splined shaft for a standard tractor PTO. 1.375 OD 6 splines. I can't seem to find specs and it shouldn't be that hard should it? Any help appreciated.

I used to have it - If I remember the inner diameter is also "round" and the splines are at an obtuse angle.

Have you looked at Surplus Central for a stub shaft - worth ther time and
    cutter you would burn through.

This is from my Barber Coleman Hob Handbook

      Parallel Key Splines

W'= .250D' where D' is = to the major diameter (OD) and W' is the width of the spline key (this is for 6 tooth splines, 4,10 and 16 tooth splines use a different ratio). In this case the keys are .34375" wide

h'= .1D for Class C fit, Slide under Load
h'= .075D for Class B fit, Slide while not under Load
h'= .05D for Class A fit, Permanent or Press Fit
Forty plus years and I still have ten toes, ten fingers and both eyes. I must be doing something right.

If you are looking for a cutter checkout www.ashgear.com They have all kinds of horizontal cutters. They also "rent" them by the month, saving you the cost of buying tooling. Unless you plan to do this repeatedly, then it is probably worth buying the cutter.

I looked and came to the same conclusion. Ordered it today.
I may take some measurements form it and record those somewhere I will probably never look again.

To supplement Spin Doctor's information, here's a PDF giving an illustration on page 6 http://www-personal.umich.edu/~seanm...gn/splines.pdf

Les, do you have a higher resolution version of that spline chart?

                    Thanks!
