  • Horton universal chuck

Acquired one of these this last weekend

it's a four jaw and a scroll chuck, all in one ..

it has a spring loaded peg sticking out of the back ..what's it for ?

the other locking devices at the back, Ive worked out .

it's quite good condition ..no rust..just needs taking apart to clean it ..
any tips appreciated..from what i can gather on it ..says patented in 1873..so maybe over 130 years old

says CONN USA on it ..so i thought you guys would know a bit more

oh, has small chunk missing out of one of the jaws ..would it be OK to weld this ..

    all the best.markj

I would NOT weld the jaws if you do not have the capability or intention to completely regrind thier clamping surfaces true to the chuck again
(ie the inside and/or outside of the jaw faces, And possabley even the 'ways' in the jaws)

You don't want heat distorting them.

its only a little nick 2 second burst with the mig..and because weld is soft, i can true it whilst its spinning in the lathe ...or even spend a few seconds fileing it

Ooo, she's an oldie. those exposed tightening nubs went away for a reason.

This might be a good candidate for electrolytic rust removal.

I've seen 3 jaw chucks with those features. They were also quite old.
