  • Turning Axis Height

I am in the process of changing lathes and am wondering if there is a preferred height for the spindle and tailstock axis?

My father built a sturdy bench for the Clausing 100MK3 and I plan on keeping the bench, but the newer lathe manufactured axis is 2 inches higher which seems a bit awkward for me at 5' 9".

    Any help will be appreciated.

I on the other hand am 6'5" I usually like my machines a little higher. But it isn't helpful to the average size guy. If you are a one man shop, make the machine a height that works for you, there is nothing wrong with that.

i try to set my stuff about belly button high. doesnt bother my back so much and is about right for my bifocals. i raised my 14" rockwell 5" because the apron controls were way too low. i have a 6" craftsman on a bench and the spindle is about elbow high. i can work off a stool with that one. good idea thinking about it in advance. if you just pick a number out of a hat,i would almost bet its the wrong number for your size.

Id worry more about the carriage controls then the workpeice height.
