  • [Windows XP]Renaming a system folder...

I had my sister re-do the Windows XP install on this computer.

Apparently she didn't understand this is for a professional environment... one of my system folders is named "sperm bank."

    Ha ha ha funny.

Now how do I change it without reinstalling?

    C:\Documents and Settings\Sperm Bank\Whatever Else Goes Here

She's in England for the next two months starting, I really don't want to take this into the shop for a reinstall.

I suppose I could live with it for two months, but I'm betting someone with Computer Fu can show me how to fix it.

If it was that simple I wouldn't be here my friend.

I get a dialog box that tells me that THIS IS A SYSTEM FOLDER AND IT CANNOT BE RENAMED.

I'm hoping there is something in a file or the registry that I can tweek.

If it's a directory (folder) under Documents and Settings, it's the name of a user. You can try renaming the user, although sometimes that causes problems.

You could copy the contents to somewhere else, delete the user, create another user, and copy the contents back into the right places. XP will have set up lots of subdirectories in D&C, but you can fill them with stuff and the applications will probably find it OK. I don't know of many apps that catalogue the contents of these directories separately.

I am the only user, when an application sets the default user name it comes up "sperm bank." 99.9% of the time I can change it per application but I don't want that hassle.

If I create another administrator account and delete the "other" one will that solve my problem?

What did you do to your sister? Is this payback for childhood or is this just her sense of humor and joie de vivre showing through?

I can't make any serious contribution to your dilemma, but it reminds me of driving through Minneapolis many years ago and the revue running at the improv theater was "Overdrawn at the Sperm Bank". Ha ha. Wished I had time to go to the show. I empathized because I've felt that way sometimes myself. Finally had to admit I just couldn't keep up.

              Harmless sibling torment, that's all.

              Is this payback for childhood
That would be aimed at her step-father not me.

Have a look at this http://oreilly.com/pub/a/windows/200...7/Bart_PE.html
You can create a bootable cd that has bartpe on it and a small version of xp then runs and you should be able to rename whatever you want on the c drive.
Its so long since I created a bartpe cd I have forgotten most of it but best to read the info on the link.

No no, she's got car repairs and maintenance coming up... I'm thinking her framastat has a hole in it's interocular encabulator shaft... given that it's molded from prefabulated ammulite I'll have to replace the ENTIRE thing and re-calibrate her grouting brushes.

Can you do it from the CMD (DOS) level?

Conceivably, renaming it may kill your system, if the O/S is configured to expect the current folder name.

You should be able to change the account name, that'll change the directory name as well:

The pictures are from my Windows 7 workstation but functionally this should be the same. (these instructions assume you are using XP Pro)

Overview:Log into the computer with the administrator account and create a new user account with a more professional User Name. Then transfer the old "sperm bank" user information to the new account.

From the the administrator account, create a new user account:
Right click My Computer: select Manage, Local Users & Groups, Users folder to create a new user account.

Copy user account info from one profile to another:
Right click My Computer: select Properties, select the Advanced tab, User Profiles settings button to copy user information from one profile to a different profile. Once the info has been copied to the new folder you can remove the old account.

Delete "SpermBank" account from Computer Manager. You can then delete the actual folder.

                          Problem solved

Note: If SpermBank is the only administrator account, create a new administrator account to work from.

Start Menu, Control Panel, Uesr Accounts, Change User Accounts. If you are the only user, chances are you already have the access to do this and change your user name there.
