So I've been scrounging around at work trying to find the parts to make a wood splitter. I want to do a hydraulics project and a wood splitter seemed like a fairly practical place to start. Here is what I've produced that is on hand currently.

Note both cylinders have new pins to go along with them. The "little" cylinder is a 4ish" bore, 2.2" rod, 24" stroke. The big cylinder is an 6ish" bore, 3.7" rod, 19" stroke. A quick check of Baum Hydraulics calculator and the big cylinder, at 3000psi, will do about 88,000 pounds of force. I'm picturing a horizontal press/wood splitter like these guys are doing.

With that in mind, I went to visit my old codger friend and picked up the I-beam you see. 12" wide I beam, 10' long. I gave him a couple hundred dollars for the I-beam and some other bits and pieces he had for me (an anvil is one cool bit), a 6" box section for the hydraulic tank/axle is another. So I'm left needing an engine and hydraulic pump. Rooted around some more and came across an old welder pushed into the corner.

    "What's wrong with the welder?"

    "Doesn't work?"

    "The engine or the welder."

"Oh, it runs great, it just won't weld anymore."

We pulled it into the shop and sure enough after a quick service if fired right up and purred. The welder was dead. Scored a 20hp Onan, electric start, front panel controls, frame mounted engine, integral frame mounted fuel tank. I'm down to scavenging a hydraulic pump and I'll have the entire thing for $200 and my labor! As soon as we warranty a skid steer pump I should be golden. I'll try to post some pics of this build once I get started.
