  • Re: Marvin Milling attachement Bearings

I'm looking at building at simple marvin styled milling attachment for my atlas horizontal mill and was wondering about a bearing selection. Would a set of wheel bearings work or do I need to have a some sort of thrust bearings? Any and all comments welcome.

    Sure, they will "work".

The better the bearing, the less small wobble in various directions the resulting spindle assembly will have. That in turn will make the cut you take with it smoother and more accurate.

Wheel bearings are probably not quite the least accurate bearing you can buy, but they are not at the much better level typically used in machine tool spindles.

That said, the wheel bearings / trailer bearings/ etc may be good enough for a Marvin-type attachment, given the limitations of mounting via the skinny, bouncy and flexible overarm.
