  • lathe spindle thread too long

I recently got a 6" 3 jaw chuck and put it on my old FLATHER lathe. The spindle thread matches the chuck thread but unable to get the rear surface of the chuck far enough on to reach the spindle mating surface. The spindle nose reaches the back surface of the jaws first, leaving approximate 1/2" between mating surfaces of the chuck and spindle. I don't want to reduce the length of the threaded portion of the spindle. Any suggestions? Paul

Turn a very accurate spacer, put a witness mark on it in relation to the spindle so it always is put on in the same orientation.

If your chuck has a removable backplate you can make a new one for it. If yout do not want to go to all that trouble then make the space as Evan suggests.
