Well no...... we are OK being about 50kms away but the mayor of Christchurch says to expect bad news. The quake happened when the central city was crowded with city workers and shoppers etc.

Thanks Michael, I know there are a few members who live in the area and may work in the city where I believe the greatest danger was.

My wife has relatives staying in Montreal Street. Not sure which end but we think it is the Cathedral end. So maybe not so good.

65 confirmed dead, expected to rise,
Montreal st is 1 block over from work, when I left I didnt go that way ,
I belive there are some collapsed hotels, but no idea where.

As this disaster unfolds it is gratifying to see how quickly the emergency services have responded, Australian govt is sending specialist assistance, should arrive around midnight only 11 hours, pretty fantastic neighbours to have really

I have family all over Chch and the Peninsula. No communication from anyone. Lots of big aftershocks. A couple of hours after the 6.3, there was a 5.9 near Akaroa. I haven't seen reports about Lyttleton, but I suspect that's real bad.

Lyttelton and New Brighton are both reported to be levelled and uninhabitable. Aftershocks will of course be around for awhile...it looks like there are a lot of buildings so damaged that one more shove will topple them. Certainly the toll is going to be very high. I read one report of two buses being crushed.

Here's the photo I took of Lyttelton on 15 September, when they were repairing damage from the initial earthquake. This is now the epicenter of today's aftershock.

That we have seen no footage of Lyttelton or Akaroa yet suggests that the tunnel must be closed, and the roads over the Port Hills destroyed.

TV3 has been reporting that the tunnel is closed, but its not clear if its blocked. They are also giving unconfirmed reports that I mentioned. I haven't been to Lyttleton, but Christchurch is one of my favourite places.
